Enjoy the view

Otkritie started as an investment bank and is now transforming into a universal bank. It recently acquired three mid-size retail banks that will eventually be migrated into the Otkritie brand. Fortune Street designed the original Otkritie brand and we are now expanding this to fit the bank’s new needs as a high street name within a larger group that includes commercial, corporate, private and investment services. Otkritie means ‘open’ in Russian. We created an ‘open window’ as a visual mnemonic to support Otkritie’s positioning as the expert financial guide, leading its customers to special and often smart, tailor-made products.
 English translation: To all of you who are not a rabbit (a fare-dodger), here’s a gift. A bank card with free trips on the metro.

ESOMAR, the world membership organisation for the market research industry, approached us at a time when it was losing momentum, with several years of static membership and a lack of marketing focus. Based on a new positioning that sought to re-establish the authority and credibility of market research, we worked closely with the management group, to produce a much more focused, purposeful identity that is used for a wide range of communications and events. Two years after the programme started, ESOMAR recorded an increase of 23% in membership, leading to a Design Effectiveness Award in 2007. We continue to work with ESOMAR’s management team to keep the brand and its communications up to date, and we’re currently re-visiting the brand structure and visual identity elements.

Vakifbank is one of Turkey's largest banks, with deep roots in all areas of society. It used to be state-owned and continued to carry a reputation for being bureaucratic. However, for some time the bank has been in the private sector, benefitting from new management, investment in IT and commercial re-structuring. Subsequently there was a mismatch between the bank’s actual success and the older state-owned image it presented through its old identity and branch designs. The aim of our work has been to align the bank’s branding with its current business success and progressive plans for expansion. Based on their slogan, Burasi Sizin Yeriniz, ‘This is your place', we redesigned the identity and completely overhauled Vakifbank’s old branch design to create a modern standard.

Pas de deux

Dance Umbrella has been bringing brave new dance to London for around thirty years. The organisation and the annual festival it puts on in the autumn more or less coined the term ‘contemporary dance’ and it has been one of its greatest promoters in the UK. When Betsy Gregory took over as Dance Umbrella’s artistic director, Fortune Street was asked to help find a new style that reflected their new outlook and sense of energy. We have helped the Dance Umbrella team think through their presentational issues, particularly given their shift in direction from major venue based work to more free-to-view and public experience work where the new excitement of new dance is happening. Our work has given them a new visual identity and communication direction.

Advanced thinking on brand

Allen &#38; Overy believed its brand was underpowered and understated and wanted to reaffirm its intuitively felt, but not demonstrably articulated, sense of identity. From the start, the project was driven by an integrated team with A&#38;O’s internal Marketing, BD and Communications specialists. We started with a robust perception study of A&#38;O in 17 countries involving nearly 500 people, clients, partners, recruiters, journalists, from 23 of the firm’s offices. This led us to propose a strengthened positioning based on the continuously re-generating goal of being seen as the world’s most advanced law firm. As an organising principle, this has far-reaching implications and applications and has been warmly received. We continue to work alongside A&#38;O to push steady adoption of the positioning, and its consequent visual identity and tone of voice developments,  across the firm’s operations and market interactions.

Shopping Russian style

Property developers ADM Group wanted to create a Russian shopping centre brand that would grow from their hometown, Rostov-on-Don to become a national chain. Using the very traditional name Kalinka Malinka (after the famous folk song), they challenged us to create something that was international, contemporary and stylish but stayed true to their Russian roots. Based on the brand idea, 'Shopping Russian style',our creative strategy exploited the historical language of Russian pattern and colour and turned it into a big, bright modern icon of new Russian retail. Working closely with architects RTKL, we created a design language that is incorporated into the architectural fabric of the centres, that gives a strong graphic language for communications and that has been extended into a range of bespoke products.

Akbank is the leading multi-specialist bank in Turkey. We started working with Akbank at the beginning of its current big phase of development to help modernise and systematise its identity, and to create a single, comprehensive branch design system that would allow the bank to expand into new areas. So far our projects have included the Big Red House brand for Akbank’s specialised mortgage services, Kredi Ekspres, a dedicated credit service brand and the development of the already popular student brand Exi26.

Communication ++

TransTelecom was set up by the Russian government 
to upgrade the IT infrastructure that runs across Russia alongside the Trans-Siberian railway into India and China. Having invested heavily in modern fibre optics but having only effectively operated as a commodity capacity supplier to international carriers, TransTelecom was given a license to compete for Russian corporate and personal data services.Fortune Street was hired to change TransTelecom's 
brand from a monopolistic, commoditised B2B facility 
to a B2B and B2C brand. Fortune Street renamed the company TTK, developed the branding relationships between the corporate carrier, the B2B market, and the consumer service, which was brought to market as TTK Nasha Liniya meaning ‘Our Line’.

The National Gallery Company, the commercial arm of London’s National Gallery, felt that their branding did not give them sufficient scope to develop activities in a way that effectively celebrated and promoted the Institution and its remarkable Collection. Fortune Street worked with the board on a new brand strategy that focused the Company's activities on driving commercial success through visitor appreciation and understanding of the Collection, independently from the Gallery’s exhibition programme. We have developed a punchy, commercial visual identity, a new strategy for retail and product development, and continue to work with them on a new strategy for developing commercial partnerships with the National Gallery brand and a new strategy for publishing and online activities.

The new world of art

Renaissance Group is the acknowledged expert in some of the world’s most dynamic emerging markets, particularly Russia and the CIS and sub-Saharan Africa. When they wanted to find a way to celebrate this and unite their people from all over the world, we proposed inaugurating a corporate art collection that reflected their global spread and expertise, through the works of the leading contemporary artists in Renaissance countries. We consulted on, curated, transported,  installed and catalogued a collection of over 170 
pieces that brought together works from artists with 
an astonishing range of backgrounds and captured 
the creativity of some of today’s most exciting and diverse cultures. Big names include El Anatsui, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Valery Koshlyakov, Konstantin Batynkov, Oksana Mas, Susan Hillier, Almagul Menilbaeva and Lara Baladi.
